VOIGT, Edward William, brewer; born, Dobeln, Saxony, Germany, Apr. 5, 1944; Son of Charles William and Pauline (Beck) Voigt; educated in schools of old country; public schools of Madison, Wis.; attended University of Wisconsin; also took full course at a commercial college; married, Apr., 1871, Bertha Dramburg, of Detroit; 4 children: Augusta, William F., Pauline M., Anna Elise (Mrs. Otto Reinvaldt). Came to America, 1854; after leaving school served apprenticeship as brewer in his father's brewery at Madison, Wis., 3 years; at age of 17 became master brewer, continuing for 2 years; started out traveling and for 1 year followed the sea on the Pacific Coast; returned, 1864, and became 2nd mate on his father's schooner, Colum. bian; later served as master, sailing the Columbian between Buffalo and Chicago; father had removed to Milwaukee, and thence to Detroit, where he established a brewery; son, E. W., succeeded to sole proprietorship of the brewery, 1871, continuing until 1889; president and treasurer Voigt Brewing Co. since its incorporation in 1889; also president Grosse Ile Bridge Co.; president Michigan Salphite Fibre Co., of Port Huron; director Miles Theatre Co. Charter member of Detroit Museum of Art. Member National Brewers' Association, Detroit Board of Commerce, Elk; Harmonie Society. Recreation: summer home, Office: 203 Grand River Ave. Residence: 438 2nd Ave. Summer Residence: Grosse Ile, Mich.
