VAN ZILE, Philip T., Judge; born, Osceola, Pa., July 20, 1843; son of David M. and Elvira C. (Cook) Van Zile; Ph.B., Alfred University, 1863; enlisted in War of the Rebellion and served in Battery E, lst Ohio Artillery, to close of war; LL.B., University of Michigan, 1867; (LL.D., Alfred, 1903); married, Dec. 28, 1866, Lizzie A. Jones, of Rochester, O.; 2 children: Hortense, Philip Donald. Began practice at Charlotte, Mich., 1867; prosecuting attorney, Eaton Co., Mich., 1868-72, judge of probate, 1872-75, circuit judge of the 5th Judicial Circuit, Michigan, 1875-78; U. S. district attorney for Utah, 1878-84; resumed practice at Detroit, 1890; member law firm of Van Zile & Brownson, 1905-8; prosecuting attorney Wayne Co., Mich., 1909-10; circuit judge, 3rd Judicial Circuit, Detroit, since 1910. Dean Detroit College of Law since 1891. Republican. Congregationalist. Mason (32°), Knight Templar (Grand Commander of Michigan, 1900), Shriner. Clubs: Detroit, Felloweraft.
