UTLEY, Henry Munson, librarian emeritus of Detroit; born at Plymouth, Mich., Aug. 6, 1836; son of Hiram and Jane (Sands) Utley; graduate University of Michigan, 1861; (A.M., 1870); married at Pontiac, Mich., Mar., 1864, Kate Lilly Burr; children: Irene (Mrs. William J. Rowell), Jane (Mrs. William H. Miller), Prances. Connected with Detroit Free Press, 1861-66; city editor Detroit Post and its successor, the Post Tribune, 1866-81; secretary Board of Education, Detroit, 1881-85; city librarian, 1885-1912, since librarian emeritus. Republican. Presbyterian. President American Library Association, 1895; auditor Young Women's Home for thirty years member Detroit Association of Charities, Alpha Delta Phi (University of Michigan).
