JOHNSTON, Donald A., life insurance; born, Lamberton Co., Ont., Apr. 24, 1874; son of Samuel and Christiana (McDonald) Johnston; educated in common schools; married at Detroit, Mar. 19, 1902, Florence Julia Widman; 1 daughter, Florence Carolyne. Caine to Detroit, 1892, and engaged in various pursuits until breaking out of the Spanish American War, in which he served as member of Co. L, Thirty second Michigan Volunteer Infantry; entered life insurance business at close of the war as cashier in Detroit office of the Union Mutual Life Insurance Co., of Portland, Me.; resigned, Dec., 1901, to become manager of the life insurance department of Peter White & Co., Marquette, Mich.; returning within a year to Detroit as superintendent of agents for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co., May 1, 1907 - May 1, 1910; since state manager Hartford Life Insurance Co., every position he has held being more remunerative than the one preceding it. Member Detroit Life Underwriters' Association (secretary treasurer, 1906-8, 2nd vice president, 1908, 1st vice president, 1909, president, 1910). Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Member Detroit Light Infantry (National Guard) for 6 years. Republican. Methodist. Mason, Palestine Lodge No. 357, King Cyrus Chapter No. 133, Detroit Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar; Moslem Temple, Mystic Shrine. Member I. O. O. F. Club: Fellowcraft.
