BURTON, Clarence Monroe, lawyer, author, abstractor; born, California, Nov. 18, 1853; son of Charles S. B. Burton; graduate University of Michigan, degree of B. S., 1873, LL. B., 1874, honorary degree, M. A., 1905; married, Dec. 25, 1872, Harriett J. Nye, who died Feb. 8, 1896; again, Dee. 27, 1897, Lina Grant, who died Oct. 4, 1898; third, June 20, 1900, Anna M. Knox; nine children: M. Agnes, Charles W., Clarence H., Fred, Louis E., Frank, Ralph, Harriett, Elizabeth. Admitted to bar at age of 21; proprietor Wayne County Abstract of Land Titles. Member Detroit Board of Education, 1900-11. President Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society since 1901. Author: Sketch of the Life of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Founder of Detroit; Cadillac's Village of Detroit, 1701-1711; In the Footsteps of Cadillac; A Chapter in the History of Cleveland; Revised Landmarks of Detroit, etc. Owns one of the largest libraries of Americans in the West. Office: 802-812 Free Press Bldg. Residence and library: 27 Brainard Street.
