BOLLES, John Edward, manufacturer; born, Chelsea, Mich., Nov. 10, 1847; son of Frederick A. and Sarah (Wooster) Bolles; educated in public schools of Chelsea, Ypsilanti Seminary, and a graduate of Ann Arbor High School; came to Detroit in 1866 and was identified with the dry goods business for six years. Married, first, Detroit, Mar. 6, 1872, Harriet F. Snow (died, 1895); two sons: William E., Howard E.; married, second, Dearborn, May 14, 1901, Laura B. Whitmore. Began as a manufacturer in 1872, member of firm of Snow & Bolles; sold interest in 1877 and was in same line of business with E. T. Barnum until 1881; organized the firm of J. E. Bones & Co. in 1882, which became the J. E. Bolles Iron & Wire Works in 1897. President of the Wayne County Sunday School Association, 1894-95; leader in the Great Sunday School Rally Day celebrations held in Detroit, 1893-99; president of the Michigan State Sunday School Association, 1902-3; member of Woodward Ave. Baptist Church. Member Detroit Board of Commerce, Builders' and Traders' Exchange. Republican. Club: Rotary. Recreations: Sunday School work and traveling. Office: corner Fourth Ave. and Porter St. Residence: 948 Cass Ave.
