BLAIN, Alexander W., landscape gardener; born, Province of Quebec, Can., May 13, 1840; son Robert and Agnes (Harvey) Blain; public school education; married, Oct. 3, 1867, Mary Gray, of Detroit; five children: Daisy M., William J. (died July 8, 1910), James H., Bethune D., Dr. Alexander W. Located in Franklin County, N. Y., at age of 18; enlisted in Co. C, 92d N. Y. Vol. Inf., Oct. 10, 1861, and participated in many important battles and movements in Virginia and North Carolina; honorably discharged, Nov. 11, 1864. Came to Detroit, 1865, and engaged as nurseryman; took a course in landscape gardening under Herman Meyer; superintendent Oakridge Cemetery, Marshall, Mich., 1867-76; superintendent Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit, since 1876. Owner of a summer home in Oakland County, Mich. Member Detroit Board Park Commissioners, two years (president one year), City Board of Lighting Commissioners, one year. Democrat. Universalist. Mason; Odd Fellow; member Detroit Post No. 384, G. A. R. Office: Elmwood Cemetery. Residence: 131 Elmwood Ave.
