BASSETT, Jay, general agent The Provident Life and Trust Co. of Philadelphia, Pa.; born, Novi, Oakland County,
Mich., Jan. 21, 1848; son of John and Ervilla (Coomer) Bassett; graduate State Normal School, Ypsilanti, Mich.,
June, 1873; married at Ann Arbor, Mich., Aug. 23, 1876, Mary A. Baker. Taught school two years after leaving normal
school; studied law in Detroit for three years, was admitted to the bar and practiced until 1885; entered life
insurance business and became general agent of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Boston, June, 1887,
continuing for ten years; became general agent of The Provident Life and Trust Co. of Philadelphia, Oct., 1899,
and six months later formed partnership with N. Reese, as Bassett & Reese, the firm since acting as general
agents of the Provident Life and Trust Co. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Member Detroit Life Underwriters'
Association. Democrat. Universalist. Mason, Knight Templar. Recreations: farming and forestry. Office: 1218 Ford
Bldg. Residence: 96 Canfield Ave. W.
