BARKLEY, James Morrison, clergyman; born, near Statesville, N. C., Nov. 22, 1846; son of John Cathey and Eliza Julia (Morrison) Barkley; A.B., Princeton, 1876; graduated Princeton Theological Seminary, 1879; (D.D., Alma College, 1899, LL.D., 1912); married, May 27, 1879, Mary E. Conwell, of Evanston, Ill. (died, Apr. 26, 1913); children: Earl C. (D.D.S.), Margary A. (Mrs. F. E. McClure), Mary G. (Mrs. F. C. Sibley). Served private to lieutenant Co. F, 73d N. C. Infantry (Junior Reserves), C. S. A., 1864-65. Ordained Presbyterian ministry, 1879; pastor Wickliffe Church, Newark, N. J., 1879-82, Hillsdale, Mich., 1882-85; state secretary Y. M. C. A., Michigan, 1885-87; pastor Third (now Forest) Avenue Church, Detroit, since 1887. Moderator Presbyterian General Assembly, Denver, 1909; president Board of Trustees, Alma College; honorary member Old Fourth Veteran Michigan Infantry; associate member Detroit Post No. 384, G. A. R. Republican. Author various published sermons and addresses. Recreation: outdoor sports. Residence: 309 Putnam Ave.
