BACKUS, Theodore L., manufacturer and dealer in office supplies and stationery; born, Detroit, Sept. 10, 1851; son of Frederick H. A. and Dorothy (Stange) Backus.; educated in Detroit public schools; married, Detroit, 1877, Anna L. Geist; two sons: Frederick Charles, Erwin Theodore. Began at 17 years of age (1868), with the house established, 1845, by his father and Arouet Richmond, as Richmond & Backus, incorporated, 1885, as the Richmond & Backus Co., manufacturers office supplies, printers' stationery, etc.; president of the company on decease of his father, 1896, until 1911, since vice president. Member Masonic order. Club: Detroit Curling. Recreation: outdoor sports. Office: 111-113 Woodward Ave. Residence: 46 Garfield Ave.
