ATWATER, Almon Byron, railway official; born, Sheffield, O., Nov. 19, 1845; son of John T. and Matilda E. (Hill) Atwater; educated at Kingsville (O.) Academy and Austenburg Institute; married, at Fort Erie, Can., 1872, Jane Thompson. Began railway service as telegraph operator, Cleveland & Erie Ry. (now part of Lake Shore Ry.), 1864, and acted as station agent at various points; studied civil engineering and was employed as civil engineer on the Jamestown & Franklin R. R. and the Erie & Pittsburg R. R. in Pa.; was assistant engineer on survey and construction of Canada Southern Ry. (now Michigan Central R. R.); chief engineer and general superintendent Georgian Bay & Lake Erie R. R. (now part of Grand Trunk Ry.), for four years; chief engineer Chicago & Grand Trunk R. R., 1882-85; superintendent Grand Trunk lines, West, 1885-98; assistant general superintendent Michigan Central Ry., 1898-1902; has been assistant to president and director Grand Trunk Ry. System (lines. West) since 1902. Also director Scotten-Dillou Tobacco Co., Forest Lawn Cemetery. Republican. Episcopalian. Mason, Knight Ternplar. Clubs: Detroit Golf, i)etroit Boat, Detroit Curling, Bloomfield Hills Country, Prismatic. Recreations: golf and curling. Office: 14 Buhi Blk. Residence: 60 Hancock Ave. E.
