ASHLEY, Edward H., wholesale and retail coal and ice; born, Richmond, N. Y., Nov. 2, 1846; son of Hiram and Polly (Gilbert) Ashley; educated in public schools and Nunda Academy, N. Y., and at Goldsmith's Business College, Detroit; married, Detroit, May 22, 1878, Eva J. Belknap; one daughter, Ruth (Mrs. Roys A. Ellis). Began active career as clerk in Warner's Dry Goods Store, Nunda, N. Y., 1865; removed to Detroit, 1869; salesman in dry goods house of Newcomb & Endicott, 1869-81, with Belknap & Drake, wholesale packing and provisions, 1881-87; entered the coal business, 1887, and organized the firm of Hall & Ashley, which was consolilated with Pittmans & Dean Co., 1892, of which he became director and secretary; also director Crystal Ice Co., Ltd. Member Sons of American Revolution. Republican. Congregationalist. Recreation: enjoyment of "the simple life." Office: 10 Adams Ave. W. Residence: 71 Garfield Ave.
