ABNER SMITH, an active farmer of’ London, Mich., was born Oct. 25, 1824, in Erie county, Ohio. His early life
was spent at home with his parents, receiving what advantages he could in education at district schools. When 21
years old he left home to do for himself, working upon a farm until 1850, when, with a company from Indiana, he
started for California by overlmd route, making the trip in about five months They went directly to the gold mines,
buying a claim. He remained in California until the summer of 1852, when he returned to Oxford, Erie county, Ohio,
going home to look after the interests of the farm. October 24, 1853, Mr. Smith married Ellen O'Leary, of Oxford.
Ohio. Mr. Smith remained on his father’s farm until September, 1855. He then purchased a farm of 30 acres and lived
on it until 1882, when he moved to London on a farm of 68 1/2 acres, where he now resides. They have nine children,
eight of whom are living. Mrs. Smith died March 10, 1879, at Oxford, Ohio.
