GEORGE KIRKLAND, born in New York City, September 1, 1810, is the son of Joseph and Hannah (Scribner) Kirkland, and came to Bedford in 1839. For sixteen years he held the office of justice of the peace, for one year was supervisor of Bedford township, and for seven years treasurer of the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wayne and Monroe counties. September 1, 1830, he was married in Greene county, New York, to Maria, daughter of John and Hannah (Kelterhouse) Couse. Of their children: four girls, two are dead; and four boys, one is dead, and Warren is living at home. In politics Mr. Kirkland has always been a Democrat, and for many years has been a member of Russell Lodge, No. 144, F. & A. M, at Lambertville.
