C. E. Thornton was born in Rockford, April 5, 1848; he received his education in Grand Rapids. During the year 1867 he was engineer on the G. R. & I. R. R. In 1868 he went to Grand Haven and kept books for Z. G. Winsor, who was then forwarding goods for the Goodrich Transportation Company. He spent his summers there and his winters in Grand Rapids. In 1872 he came to Rocklord and engaged in the hardware business with Eusley Martin. This partnership was dissolved in 1877, and is now conducted by Mr. Thornton alone. He carries a full line of hardware, farming implements, edge tools, etc., and also manufactures sheet iron and tinware goods, cultivators and cutting boxes.
