Nijah D. Chamberlain was born Jan. 2, 1821, in Glenville, N. Y. His father, Benj. Chamberlain, was born in Massachusetts;
his mother, Hannah (Bailey) Chamberlain, in New York. In 1845 Mr. C. bought 60 acres of land in Portland, Ionia
Co., where he lived 31 years, and sold out to buy 80 acres in Charlotte, Eaton Co. He sold a second time 18 months
after, and after a residence of five years in the city of Charlotte, he bought 80 acres on Sec. 7, this tp., where
he now resides. The place is desirably located and valued at $65 per acre. He was married Oct. 26, 1843 to Permelia,
daughter of John W. and Charlotte (Randolph) Smith, natives of New Jersey, of Phelps, Ontario Co., N. Y. The following
is a record of their children: Benj. Franklin, born April 22, 1845, died May 16, 1864, of a wound, received May
12; Charles, born Aug.. 29, 1848; James, born Sept. 1, 1850, died Feb. 14, 1864; John B., born INov. 7, 1852, died
Jan. 11, 1854; Mary. E., born Jan. 2, 1857; William, born May 20, 1859, died Sept. 10, 1872; Stewart, born June
22, 1867.
