Capt. Joel H. Smith, who came into the embryo village from Cassopolis in January, 1848, with the first stock
of goods, was born in 1820, in Oneida County, N. Y. He became a resident of Cassopolis in 1846. During the war
of the rebellion, he organized and commanded Company A, of the Nineteenth Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
