Dr. James B. Wescott was born in Gorham, May 21, 1841, and received his education in the common schools, after
which he passed eight years in North Jay, and then in Portland until he entered the volunteer army as a private,
August 22, 1862, in the Twentieth Maine Regiment; was promoted to hospital steward and assistant surgeon, and was
honorably discharged at the close of the war. He then came to Bath, where he worked at mechanical employment while
studying medicine; took four courses of lectures at the Maine Medical School, graduating in 1889, having, unaided,
worked his way through, and has since that time been in successful practice in Bath. He has been United States
Pension Examiner since 1889, and served the city as member of the Common Council in 1876 and 1877. On December
31, 1869, he married, in Bath, Miss Eliza M. Taylor. She died in January, 1879, leaving two young daughters.
