Smith, Alfred, is a native of Stockport, England, and was born in November, 1841. With his wife he came to the
United States in 1871, and laid the modest foundations of the present business in 1873. From small beginnings it
has grown to its present large proportions, having a frontage of 100 by 125 feet, two stories, steam power, employs
forty men, seven wagons and fifty agencies. Mr. Smith erected the buildings to suit the growth of trade. Mrs. Smith
died in 1876.
