Ray, William H., son of Emery B. and Eliza A. (Thomas) Ray, was born in Windham county, Connecticut, December
2, 1837, and was educated in the public schools of his native town. In 1854 he removed to Freetown, where he has
since resided, and has always been engaged in farming and painting, in which he has been most successful. He was
married, in 1872, to Mary, daughter of John Manchester, of Fall River; she died in 1877. Mr. Ray has never taken
a very active part in public affairs and has never sought or held public office. He is a man of few words and prefers
to listen rather than be listened to.
