Newell, Fred A., was born in Franklin, August 8, 1845. His father, Hiram Newell, was a native of Cumberland,
R. I., and the family were among the early settlers. Hiram Newell married Clarissa Scott and through life was engaged
in boat building at Franklin and was the pioneer of that industry; he died April 26, 1859. Fred A. Newell was educated
in the public schools and for a time was engaged in the straw business. In 1874 he engaged in the jewelry business
and at the present time Watson & Newell are the leading manufacturers in the two Attleboroughs. In 1892 Mr.
Newell married Alida daughter of Capt. Samuel D. Walden. Mr. Newell is one of the self made men of Bristol county,
conservative and entirely unassuming and has ever taken an intelligent interest in educational and religious institutions.
In 1864 he enlisted in Co. G, 5th Mass., and was one to answer the last call of Abraham Lincoln for volunteers.
