Her father was John Howard, a native of Fairhaven, and followed the trade of ship blacksmithing on the old south wharf for many years, finally selling out to Luther F. Miss Howard's grandfather, William Howard, was a farmer at New Boston (East Fairhaven), and was known as a representative citizen of the community. Her mother, Sylvia Delano, was a member of the celebrated old Puritan family, headed by Philip De Ia Noye; mention of whom is given elsewhere in this work.
