PHILIP STEPHENS is the youngest of six children born to John and Catharine Stephens, both natives of Germany.
His parents settled in Shelby County, Ind., in an early day, where our subject was born April 16, 1818; his father
died when he was but four years of age, and he remained with his mother until he was sixteen. Mr. S. then began
business for himself with $60 capital; he worked by the month until he was twenty one, and during this time had
attended school three winters. When he became of age he had saved $700 which he invested in land. Mr. Stephens
was married, March 9, 1871, to Miss Cynthia J. Cherry, a native of Indiana. Five sons bless this union - Charles
E., Phillip W., William F., Samuel O. and an infant. Mr. Stephens, after his marriage, lived in Shelby County about
eight years, and in the fall of 1878 came to Howard County and purchased sixty acres of good farm land. Mr. Stephens
has always voted the Democratic ticket, was an active member of the Grange Society in Shelby County, and he and
wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
