DAVID HEXTER, son of Levi and Barbara Dexter, was born in Germany February 24, 1844, and came with his parents to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1849. At the age of thirteen, he went to Pittsburgh, Penn., where he learned butchering, and then went into business for himself. In 1861, he enlisted in Company B, Second West Virginia Infantry, and was three years in active service, taking part in the engagements at Philippi, Garrett's Ford, Rich Mountain, Monterey, Cross Keys, Cedar Mountain, second Bull Run, Antietam, Flat Rock, Rocky Gap, Lynchburg, etc.; he was discharged in August, 1864, when he returned to Pittsburgh. In 1870, he came to Kokomo and engaged in the grocery and butcher business; he now carries a stock valued at $2,000, and his transactions in 1882 amounted to $23,000. May 23, 1867, he married Miss Barbara Mayer, also a native of Germany, and to their union four children have been born - Isador, Max F., Hattie and Samuel J. Mr. and Mrs. H. are members of the Hebrew Church, and he is also an Odd Fellow. Politically, he is identified with the Democratic party.
