John Morrill was born in Concord, N. H., in 1827, and lived on a farm until he was thirteen years of age, when
he. came to Ottawa, Ill. Before he was of age he enlisted in Company I, First Illinois Infantry, in the Mexican
war, taking part in the battle of Buena Vista. Returning to Ottawa, he learned the gunsmith's trade, following
it until 1849, when he went to California, where he mined until 1853, when he returned to Ottawa. In 1858 he engaged
in farming. He raised a company, known as Company A, for the First Battalion Yates' Sharpshooters. He served during
the war and was brevetted Brigadier-General in 1865. Mr. Morrill was married in 1857 to Arm Mitchell, who died
in 1865 leaving two children, Cincinnatus, a farmer in Elk County, Kan., and Blanche, residing at home. He was
married again, in 1869, to Visa C. Conger, daughter of David and Samantha (Armstrong) Conger, now residents of
Ophir Township.
