Joseph Mertel is a native of Bavaria, Germany, born Oct. 31, 1831, and lived at his birth place till twenty
years of age. He came to America in the spring of 1852, and. first located in Wayne County, Pa., where he remained
about six months. He then lived two and a half years at Buffalo, N. Y., when lie went to Chicago where he spent
one year, and in November, 1855, he came to La Salle County, Ill., and was employed in Wolford & Florry's meat
market for two years at Ottawa. He then was employed in a meat market at Peru for six months, when lie came to
Deer Park Township and worked for his brother about two years. He then purchased eighty acres of his present farm
on which he settled in 1862. He has been successful in his farming pursuits, and now owns 160 acres on section
5 where he resides, and also owns 13 acres on section 7. Feb. 20, 1865, he was married to Isabella Bollivar, a
native of Ohio, born in 1848, and daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Stump) Bollivar, the father a farmer of South Ottawa,
and the mother deceased. Mrs. and Mrs. Mertel have ten children living - Charles, Margaret, John, Joseph, Andrew,
Peter, Mary, Frank, Henry and Agnes. One child, William, died Aug. 20, 1873, aged twenty months. Politically Mr.
Mertel is a Democrat. He is a member of the Catholic church.
