Jesse M. Johnson was born in Clinton County, Ohio, Dec. 14, 1831, a son of David and Anna Hester Johnson, the father a native of North Carolina and the mother a native of Ohio. He was reared on a farm and received a common school education. He was married in Marion County, Ind., in 1854, to Sarah Fenner, of Ohio. They have a family of seven children - Lovina, wife of John T. Mason; Elizabeth A., wife of Robert Smith; Arta J., Laura, Le Roy, Ella M. and Robert. Mr. Johnson came to this county in 1861 and has now ninety six acres of land worth $75 per acre. He has always taken an active interest in the affairs of his township. He was Justice of the Peace eight years and Assessor for the same length of time, besides holding other local offices of trust. In politics he is a staunch supporter of the Republican party. His parents were married in Clinton County, Ohio, and in 1852 came to La Salle County and settled in Otter Creek Township where he engaged in farming. They had a family of ten children, nine born in Clinton County, Ohio, arid one born in this county, eight of whom are still living. Their names are-Jesse M.; Robert B., deceased; Abraham H.; Elizabeth M., wife of Joshua Ayers; Charles M.; John P., deceased; Martha A., wife of Godfrey Elzebuch; David O.; Ethelinda, wife of Ezra Morrison; and Susaunah, wife of Andrew Trainor.
