Jonathan C. Gochanour, one of the early settlers of La Salle County, was born in Hardin County, Va., July 25,
1818, and is a son of Jacob and Leah (Christman) Gochanour. His parents were reared and married in Hardin County,
Va., and were the parents of eleven children, all of whom grew to maturity. Mr. Gochanour took an active interest
in the whisky insurrection. In politics. he was a Democrat. Jonathan C. was reared on a farm. He learned the carpenter's
trade which he still follows occasionally. He went to Licking County, Ohio, where he was married in 1840 to Miss
Lucy Bitter, and to them were born twelve children, nine still living - William, Amanda, Mathias, Angus, James,
Jane, John, Anna and Edward. All the children are residents of this county, with the exception of Angus and Amanda,
who reside in Cass County, Iowa. Our subject came to La Salle County, Oct. 27, 1847, and settled in Rutland Township.
In 1850 he located on section 22, Otter Creek Township, but later sold his farm and purchased land on section 10,
where he still resides. Mr. Gochanour came to this county with a large family, but with little means, but by hard
work and economy he has acquired a competency, and today is one of the well-to-do farmers of the county. He has
185 acres of land, 120 of which is under cultivation, and valued at $75 per acre. Politically he is a staunch Democrat.
He cast his first vote for Martin Van Buren.
