William R. Clayton was born May 8, 1835, on section 32, Deer Park Township, La Salle Co., Ill., where he now
resides. His parents, William and Elizabeth (Puntney) Clayton. both now deceased, the former dying 1885, aged seventy
nine, and the latter dying in 1873, aged sixty nine years. He was reared in his native county, where he attended
the common schools. He completed his education at Farm Ridge Seminary in the winter of 1855-'56, after which he
commenced farming, renting his father's land till 1864, when he bought his present farm, theii containing 160 acres.
He has purchased laud from time to time till he now owns 282 acres, which is located in sections 32, 33 and 35,
in Deer Park Township. March 14, 1866, he was married to Sarah E. Ostrander, a daughter of John A. and Mary J.
Ostrauder. Her father is now living in Delphos, Ottawa Co., Kan., and is eighty one years of age. He was born in
New York State, and is of Holland descent. Her mother died in Deiphos, in August, 1SS2, aged sixty eight years.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton have the following children - Alma W., born Aug. 10, 1867; Nettie M., Jan. 22, 1870, and Lou
I., Sept. 11, 1876. They have also one adopted child Fred. W., born Feb. 27, 1S82. Mr. Clayton has served as School
Director almost continuously for the past eight or nine years. He was also Township Collector for one season.
