John S. Clayton is a native of Deer Park Township, La Salle Co., Ill., born June 18, 1837, a son of William
and Elizabeth (Puntney) Clayton. He was reared and educated in his native township, and when twenty-seven years
of age bought a part of his father's farm where he now resides. Mr. Clayton was married Dec. 19, 1861, to Julia
A. Surdam, born in Litchfield County, Conn., daughter of L. L. and Julia A. (Lockwood) Surdam. Her father died
in Michigan while visiting a brother, and her mother died in Ford County, Ill., at the home of her son George.
Mrs. Clayton is the third one of four children, the others being Royce G., Cythera and George L. Royce G. is a
resident of Southern California. Cythera is the wife of Charles W. Down, of Ford County, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton
have three children - Grant F., born Nov. 7, 1864; Charles S., June 4, 1867, and Glennie A., Aug. 15, 1875.
