Frederick Bastian, section 36, Adams Township, was born in Alsace, France, June 16, 1839. When he was an infant
his father, Charles Bastian, died, and his mother afterward married Louis Stauffer, who brought the family to America
in 1845, settling in Northville Township, where lie resided many years. Our subject subsequently settled in Adams
Township, where he remained three years, after which he lived in Serena Township for seven years, when he returned
to Adams Township, where he has since been engaged in farming and stock raising. He has been successful in his
agricultural pursuits, and now has a fine farm containing 156 acres. He was married Feb. 18, 1862, to Magdelena
Girolt, and of the eight children born to them six are living—Caroline, Libbie, Ella, Daniel, William and Edward.
While living in Serena Township Mr. Bastian served as Tax Collector, and also six years as School Director. He
has also held the office of School Director in this township six years. He and his wife are members of the Evangelical
Association.
