SMITH, EDWARD E. - Born at Danville, Boyle county, Ky., Sept. 3, 1848. Son of Dr. Joseph and Margaret J. Smith, the father's ancestors being English and German, and the mother's En. glish and Irish. The family is descended from the Pendletons of Virginia and Ohio, and related to Gen. Zachary Taylor. Mr. Smith came to Chicago in July, 1887, and liking the prospects decided to go into business at once. He had been educated at Kentucky University, Lexington, after attending the common schools and the academy of Center College at Danville; was a teacher for twenty years, from 1867 to 1887, several years in Kentucky University and for about ten years in Indiana Industrial University, holding the chair of English Literature and History at the time of his resignation. Since that time has been the nianager of the Chicago branch of the publishing house of D. C. Heath & Co., in which Mr. Smith has been eminently successful, having increased the business of the concern to many times its original size. His father was an elder in the Christian church for twenty-five years, and practiced medicine in central Kentucky for thirty-nine years; was secretary of the board of trustees in the Kentucky University, and held other important positions in that institution Mr. Smith is a prominent Odd Fellow, and wrote the ritual for that order's decoration day exercises for Indiana; he was president of the Indiana State Teacher's association, 1883, and was secretary and treasurer of the national educational exhibit at Madison, Wis., in 1884; was assistant secretary of the National Educational Association at Saratoga, in 1885. Mr. Smith is a member of the Christian church is a Mason, and has so far had firm faith in the republican party. He has written many short articles on educational topics, which have been eagerly sought for by journals in the educational field. In 1874 he was married to Alice Bradford Gathright, of Louisville, Ky. The eldest child, Ashby, is deceased; three others are living, Alice Estelle, Austin R. and Edna.
