KASPER, JOSEPH. - Born January 30, 1852, at Oresti, Bohemia. Son of Joseph and Dorothea Kasper. Parents Bohemian,
who came to America in 1864, bringing with them six children, and settling in Owatonna, Minn., where seven more
children were born. Subject of sketch is the eldest and came to Chicago in 1873. He received his education in Bohemia
between the ages of six and twelve years; has never attended any school in this country; is practically a self-educated
man; followed the occupation of farming until 15 years of age, when he learned the watchmaker's trade, and worked
at the bench until he was 18. He then removed to La Crosse, Wis., where he was employed by a jewelry firm as salesman,
and a year later as commercial traveler. On coming to Chicago, February 12, 1883, he was emploved by the jewelry
firm of J. B. Chambers & Co., at a salary of $6 per week: continued with the firm until January 1, 1868, having
become one of their most valuable men, and was not only receiving a large salary but had been given an interest
in the house. He then formed a partnership with C. B. Shourds under the firm name of Shourds & Kasper. The
business of this firm has been remarkably successful, and Mr. Kasper makes annual trips abroad for the purpose
of purchasing diamonds and precious stones. Besides, he is president of the Ashland Block Pharmacy. In religion
he is a Catholic. Was married in 1877 to Miss Belle McKinsil of Brighton, Ontario, and has two children, Raymond
and Samuel, aged 11 and 9, respectively.
