JOHNSON, JOHN M. - Born May 13, 1845, at Cincinnati, Ohio. He entered railway service in 1870, as station agent of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati & Lafayette railroad at Franklin, Ind., remaining there until November 1, 1872, when he became general freight and ticket agent of the Cincinnati & Martinsville railroad. When the latter company became a part of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati & Lafayette system, in 1875, he became traveling auditor of the company, and in 1877 assumed charge of its local freight traffic. From 1879 to 1883 he was assistant general freight agent of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati & Lafayette and the Cincinnati, Lafayette and Chicago railroads, with headquarters at Lafayette, Ind. He then became assistant general freight agent of the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis & Chicago road, in charge of freight traffic originating in Chicago and the northwest. On Feb. 25, 1884, he accepted a position as assistant general freight agent of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific company, and since March 1, 1888, he has been the general freight agent of that road. He served one year as chairman of the western classification committee, and was a member of the uniform classification committee, representing the Western Freight Association.
