GEORGE S. HARTER, carpenter and builder, and Constable, came with his parents to Cook County June 16, 1843, locating between what is now Dolton and Riverdale. His father following farming, he was raised on a farm until sixteen years of age; then learned the carpenter’s trade, and has followed contracting nnd building since, He now owns the southeast quarter of Section 3, Township 36, Range 14. Since 1873 he has been identified with a fertilizing company. He has served in the capacity of school director and Constable of Cook County. In July, 1862 he enlisted in Battery M, 1st illinois Light Artillery. After refusing promotion three times he finally accepted the promotion to Sergeant; was mustered out in July, 1865. August 10, 1865, he was married to Miss Frederica L. Dah;mann, a native of Germany. Thcv have six ehildren Ervine F., John S., Jennie E., Andrew D. Wesley R. and Julia L. Mr. Harter is a member of the I. O. O. F.
