WILLIAM GOTTSCHALK came to Cook County in 1854 and settled at Homewood. where he bought forty acres of land
for $500 and engaged in farming. He now owns 370 acres of fine land and six dwellings in the village. In 1868 he
began hay pressing, and has since made that almost an exclusive business. He now owns and operates two hay presses,
which havo a capacity of fourteen tons per day, employiag fifteen men and about the same number of horses. He was
born in Hanover, Germany, December 19, 1826l was raised a carpenter in his native country and came to the United
States in 1854. In 1859 he married Miss Christina Niemann, a native of the same place. They have six children -
Christina, Mary, Wilhelmina, William Henry and Alvina. They are members of the Evengelical Lutheran Church of Homewood.
