HEMAN GARDNER. dealer in general merchandise, began trade in 1867. He came to Cook County, Ill., in 1848, then
for some time lived at Sandwich, Ill., returning to Cook County in 1856. In August. 1862, he enlisted in Company
A, 113th Illinois Volunteer infantry. He was mustered out June 29, 1865. He followed farming two years, then embarked
in merchandising. He was born in Tompkins County, N. Y., June 1. 1839. lie was married in 1867 to Miss Maria Bush,
of Ulster County. N. Y. They have four childrcn - Estella, Ella, Mattie Ethel and Alice J.
