JAMES H. FURMAN, retired, P. 0. Wilmette, was born in New York City September 28, 1820. He came to De Kalb County. Ill., in 1839, and engaged in farming for several years. He was editor and proprietor of the Sandwich Gazette for nine years. Coming to Chicago in 1874, he engaged in the leather trade until 1881 when he sold out and retired from business. In Febrnary, 1875, he came to Wilmette and purchased his present home, where he has since resided. In De Kaib County he held time in offices of Highway Commissioner, Assessor and Supervisor, and was one of the members of the Board of Equalization appointed by Governor Palmer. He married Miss Frances Sweet, of Canada, Augnst 22, 1848, whose parents settled in La Salle County. Ill., in 1837. They have seven childrenó Jennette, William, Caroline, Lacy, John, Jane E. and James H., Jr.
