THOMAS DEWIRE, farmer, P. 0. Elgin, was born 1830 in St. Mary's, L. C., settled in Jefferson Co., N. Y., at thirteen; came to Illinois in 1848 and worked as a farmer until August, 1862; he then enlisted in the 5th Illinois Battery, with which he served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina, and in the battles of Kingston, Strawberry Plains and Goldsboro, N. C. Since the war lie has been manager or steward of the Pea. Herrick farm, in Hanover. His wife was Jane Caldwell, and they have one son. John Dewire, born in Hanover Township. Pea. Luther Herrick, deceased, an honored pioneer of Hanover, was a settler of 1842, prominent in the early political and religious history of the township and secured a large and valuable farm, on which he erected almost a village of buildings. He died in February, 1880, a member of the First Congregational Church of Elgin. His widow lives on the old homestead, aged eighty-six.
