DENT, THOMAS. - Born in Putnam county, Ill., Nov. 14, 1831. His father was George Dent, and his mother's maiden
name was Comfort Ijams. The Dent family is of English extraction. The subject of this sketch traces his ancestors
back to Maryland. One of such ancestors removed to London county, Va., prior to 1755, and from that ancestor the
lineage is more distinctly traced by Mr. Dent. His father was born in Monongahela county, Va., now West Virginia,
and his mother was born in Perry county, Ohio. He received his education mainly in the public schools of Illinois
and Ohio, near the family residence, but extended the same by private study, and early took up the study of law;
was admitted to the bar and has since pursueJ that calling. He came to Chicago In February, 1856. He was for a
number of years attorney for the Chicago Board of Trade, and has also acted in that capacity for sundry other corporate
bodies. He has been president of the Chicago Law Institute and of the Illinois State Bar Association. In his legal
practice he has been connected with a number of important cases, and has not been confined to any special line
of practice. He has done considerable writing in his professional career, and has delivered occasional addresses
before the Illinois State Bar Association and other associations. Mr. Dent was married in 1857 to Miss Susan Strawn,
of Putnam county, Ill. Their only child died in 1882.
