DANDY, JOHN M, - Born at Versallies, Ky., April 13, 1852. Son of Rev. Dr. W, C. and Mary A. Dandy. John M. Dandy was educated at the Northwestern University, which he entered in 1869, graduating in 1873, the youngest man in the class, and one of eight selected to deliver the orations of the day. During his term at college he had acted as a special correspondent for the Chicago Times, Journal and other papers, and had acquired a decided taste for journalism. He was thus urged by his inclination to establish a paper of his own, and in 1875 he, in connection with Major George M. McConnell, for many years dramatic and musical editor of the Times, and Lyman B. Glover, now dramatic and musical editor of the Morning Herald, began the publication of the Saturday Evening Herald. The prosperity of the paper was assured almost from the start, and Mr. Dandy has become the sole publisher and editor. The Saturday Evening Herald is to-day recognized by the public and the press as the established authority on all matters pertaining to polite society. The high esteem in which the paper is held is evidence of the success and of the able management it has had in Mr. Dandy's hands. It has a wide and influential circulation among the best families of the city and the surrounding suburbs. The building up of this enterprise has been Mr. Dandy's lifework, and it is one of which he or any man might be proud. Personally, John M. Dandy is one of the most popular men in the city of Chicago. He is an active and prominent member of the Press Club of Chicago, and his name has been frequently mentioned in connection with the presidency of that organization. lie is also a member of a number of other social clubs and societies, and at the annual meeting of the Alumni Association of the Northwestern University, held June 14, 1893, he was elected president forthe ensuing year, Mr. Dandy was married Oct. 22, 1884, to Nellie Blanford Cook; has two children, a boy and a girl.
