ALTPETER, JOHN J. - Born in Bischmisheim, Rhine province, Germany, Oct. 31, 1832. Mr. Altpeter came to America
when he was 14 years old and located in Rochester, N. Y. He learned the watchmaker's trade and worked at it for
nearly 18 years. He came to Chicago in 1866 and established a business on South Halsted street. He became interested
to a certain extent in politics and was elected to the common council in 1879. On the first establishment of the
Citizens ticket Mr. Altpeter was elected a member of the drainage board. He is taking a great interest in the work
and is considered one of the thoroughly active members, He is a prominent member of a number of German organizations.
