ALLERTON, SAMUEL W. - Born in Duchess county, N. Y., in 1829. A farmer lad and with only such education as he
could obtain at district schools in the winter, he has become one of Chicago's best known citizens and is ranked
among her wealthiest and most prominent financial men. lie worked on a farm until he was 18, and then began stock
raising on his own account. He was very energetic, and before he was twenty one had accumulated between $4,000
and $5,000. With this capital he came west and invested in a cattle ranch in Piatt county, Ill. Chicago, however,
had become his headquarters, even while attending to his ranch business, and by his enterprise and persistent attention
to all details, he soon became known as one of the most successful stock raisers in this section. He branched out
and became the owner of many stock farms, and was also interested in many of the principal stock yards in the United
States His great success is entirely due to energy and business ability, and in the latter connection his wonderful
financiering has been a strongly marked feature. He has for years been a director of the First National Bank ,
and has ever been one of that institution's most valuable advisers. He is also a director in the Chicago City Railway
Company, and has been a most useful accession to the World's Fair directory. He has from the first been one of
Chicago's most aclive and interested citizens, and has been identified with all movements of importance tending
toward her improvement. The time came but recently when the people felt that the head of the city government should
be some one outside of the political ring, and after much pressing in 1893, he, as a matter of duty, accepted the
republican nomination for mayor, but was defeated at the polls by Carter H. Harrison. Mr. Allerton has been twice
married; his first wife was Miss Paduella W. Thompson, of Peoria. She died in 1880, and a year later he married
her sister, Agnes C. He has two children, one boy, Robert H, and one girl, Katy R.
