ALLEN, HENRY C., M. D. - Born in Middlesex county, Ont., Oct. 2, 1836. He is professor of materia medica and
the institutes of medicine and dean of the faculty of Hahnemann Medical College. He received his literary education
in the common schools, finishing at the grammar school in London, a ter which he engaged in teaching for two years,
when he entered the Cleveland Homoepathic Medical College! from which he graduated in 1861. He passed his examination
before the Ontario board of examiners, and began practice at Brantford. The following year he was elected professor
of anatomy in his alma mater, and spent three months each winter in Cleveland. In 1868, he resigned, and soon after
was appointed professor of anatomy in the Hahnemann Medical College, Chicago, and on the resignation of Prof. Beebe,
the following year, was tendered the chair of surgery, but on account of previous business engagements was unable
to accept. In 1876 he removed to Detroit, where he practiced until 1880. During his residence in Detroit he published
his work on intermittent fever, now recognized as the sta'ndard work in the homceopathic school, In January, 1880,
he was appointed lecturer on materia medica and clinical medicine in the homoeopathic department of the University
of Michigan, and while there became editor and publisher of the Medical Advance. He removed to Chicago in March,
1890, forming a partnership with the late Dr. W. S. Gee in Hyde Park, and in the autumn accepted the position of
associate professor of materia medica and institutes of medicine in Hahnernann Medical College. Besides his work
on intermittent fever he edited Gregg's work on consumption, to which he appended the therapeutics of tube rculous
affections.
