JOHN AHRENS is a native of Mecklenburg, Prussia, where he was born in 1826. He came to the United States in
1850, and located first at New Orleans, where he stayed three and a half years. Not liking it there, he removed
to Niles Township. where he bought a farm of about a hundred acres. He followed farming till 1873, when he started
a saloon at Ahrens’ Grove, Niles Township, which he still keeps. He married Mary Klampert in 1850, and has eight
children, three sons and five daughters. He is a member of the Lutheran Church. He was Commissioner of Highways
for two years, and has held other town offices.
