On November 1, 1855, William Kent, surveyor of Marion County, laid out the Town of Reedville, which was named for
the proprietor, J. C. Reed, with whom was associated Christian Houseman. The plat, which was filed in the recorder's
office on February 11, 1856, shows Center Street running east and west, and Jefferson, Marion and Des Moines streets
running north and south. Reedville was situated north of the Des Moines River, in section 8, township 77, range
20, and not far from Prairie Creek. Of the seventy two lots surveyed a few were sold, but the town never grew to
any considerable proportions, and where it was projected is now a farm.
