Iowa County, IA Biographies

Dr. D. W. Philips, who is actively engaged in the practice of medicine at Victor and also owns a store there, was born in Ohio on the 19th of June, 1858, a son of E. W. and Jane (Galbreth) Philips, both natives of Pennsylvania, who removed to Ohio in an early day in the history of that state. They continued to reside there until called to the great beyond.

Dr. D. W. Philips was reared and educated in the Buckeye state and after completing his public school education entered the medical department of Ohio State University, from which he was graduated on the 3d of March, 1885. In the fall of that year he removed to Guernsey, Poweshiek county, Iowa, and there began his practice. After a short time, however, he came to Iowa county and settled at Victor, where he remained for a year. He was next in Kansas for two years but in 1888 returned to Victor and for the last twenty seven years has resided here, enjoying a large and profitable practice. Moreover, he holds title to forty acres of good land in Iowa county and is a substantial citizen.

In 1888 Dr. Philips married Miss Anna Mintier, a native of Ohio and a daughter of James and Mary (Barnett) Mintier, both natives of Ohio. They were highly esteemed in their locality and there was much regret when they were called to the home beyond. Dr. and Mrs. Philips have had two children: Earle M., of Los Angeles, California; and Everett W., who died when thirteen years of age.

Dr. Philips is a republican and has held a number of local offices. He has been county coroner, has served on the town council and as mayor of Victor. For several years he was a member of the school board and has always taken a keen interest in the welfare of the public school system. He and his wife are consistent members of the Congregational church and he likewise belohgs to Sharon Lodge, No. 287, A. F. & A. M. He has a gratifying practice not only in Iowa county but also in Poweshiek county, and his success in his profession is well deserved as he is constantly studying to broaden his knowledge and is careful in diagnosis.
