Elias H. Matteson, a farmer whose residence is within the corporate limits of Ladora, was born in Goshen, Vermont,
on the 31st of October, 1841, a son of Elias and Tryphena (Hitchcock) Matteson, both natives of Vermont They were
reared and married in the Green Mountain state and continued to reside there until about 1882, when they migrated
westward and took up their abode with a married daughter living in Sumner township, this county. While residing
in Vermont the father followed agricultural pursuits and was also interested in lumbering, operating a sawmill
for a number of years.
Elias H. Matteson received his education in the common schools and after reaching manhood engaged in farming and
lumbering. In 1885 he came to Iowa and located in Genoa Bluff, Sumner township, where he rented land. In 1897 he
purchased his present farm adjoining the town of Ladora and two years later took up his residence thereon. His
home is within the limits of the town and his property is one of the valuable and well improved farms of Hartford
township. He has met with gratifying success which is well deserved, as it is the result of his well directed industry.
In 1867 occurred the marriage of Mr. Matteson and Miss Emily Lewis, of Ripton, Vermont, and they have three children:
Clinton A., who is residing in Whittier, California; Lillian V., the wife of Dr. J. L. Augustine, of Ladora, Iowa;
and Elwin E., a stock dealer of Ladora. Mr. Matteson is a republican in politics and for eight years has been a
member of the town board of Ladora, while for several years he was a member of the board of township trustees.
He is one of the representative men of Ladora and Hartford township and is recognized as a public spirited citizen
and a prosperous agriculturist.
