H. B. Folkmann, a well known farmer owning two hundred and forty acres of land in Hilton and Troy townships,
was born in this county on the 18th of March, 1863, a son of Christian and Wilheltnina Folkmann, both natives of
Germany. In 1854 they emigrated to the United States and after living in Ohio for a time removed to Iowa county,
Iowa. The father was an agriculturist by occupation and both he and his wife passed away upon the home farm. They
were the parents of nine children, four of whom survive.
H. B. Folkmann received a common school education and remained at home until he reached years of maturity. He then
bought a farm in Osceola county, Iowa, and after operating it for two years traded it for land in this county.
He took up his residence upon that farm in 1888 but later sold it and bought one hundred and sixty acres in Hilton
township, to which he has added until he now holds title to two hundred and forty acres of fine land. He makes
a specialty of raising shorthorn cattle and as his stock is always of high grade he derives a handsome profit from
his stock raising activity. He keeps his land in splendid condition and uses the latest machinery in the cultivation
of his fields and is rewarded by abundant harvests.
In 1888 Mr. Folkmann was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Maas, a native of this county and a daughter of Gerd
and Anna Maas, both natives of Germany, who emigrated to the United States in the '5os. The father passed away
in this county but the mother is still living. Mrs. Folkmann is the second child born to her parents and by her
marriage has become the mother of seven children, Christian, George, Adolph, Minnie, Henry. August and Emma.
The family belong to the German Lutheran church and are influential in its work. Mr. Folkmann is a democrat and
is now assessor of Hilton township. He is characterized by energy and sound judgment and his affairs are so well
managed that his resources are steadily increasing.
