ALLEN G. THURMAN. - "The noblest Roman of them all" was the title by which Mr. Thurman was called
by his compatriots of the Democracy. He was the greatest leader of the Democratic party in his day and held the
esteem of all the people, regardless of their political creeds. Mr. Thurman was born November 13, 1813, at Lynchburg,
Virginia, where he remained until he had attained the age of six years, when he moved to Ohio. He received an academic
education and after graduating, took up the study of law, was admitted to the bar in 1835, and achieved a brilliant
success in that line, In political life he was very successful, and his first office was that of representative
of the state of Ohio in the twenty ninth congress. He was elected judge of the supreme court of Ohio in 1851. and
was chief justice of the same from 1854 to 1856. In 1867 he was the choice of the Democratic party of his state
for governor, and was elected to the United States senate in 1869 to succeed Benjamin F. Wade, and was re-elected
to the same position in 1874. He was a prominent figure in the senate, until the expiration of his service in 1881.
Mr. Thurman was also one of the principal presidental possibilities in the Democratic convention held at St. Louis
in 1876. In 1888 he was the Democratic nominee for vice president on the ticket with Grover Cleveland, but was
defeated. Allen Granberry Thurman died December 12, 1895, at Columbus, Ohio.
